Day 14: Radford, VA to Claytor Lake, VA (9 miles)

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

We needed to do laundry so we went to the local laundromat to hang out, then across the street to buy PB&J fixin's and other foodstuff. We decided to bike 9 miles to Claytor Lake. It was already late and people were tired, but another motel would be expensive - I've been whining about expenses - so we compromised on a short day with camping.

Claytor Lake is a great campground ... showers, sink for dishes, a lake, peace and quiet. Perfect. We biked to the store nearby and bought weiners, s'mores ingredients and some brews (both root and ale) and just chilled out for the day. The lady at the store had an inkling that we don't camp much once we started asking about firestarters and s'mores ratios (how many hershey bars to a bag of marshmallows?). She actually said "Y'all don't do much campin' do ya?" Oh well, we actually got a roaring fire due to Aaron's boy scout days and the s'mores were pretty straightforward to assemble, so now I can say we're expert campers. At night we sat around the campfire and listened to music (iPod with portable speakers). After all this relaxing we should be ready for a long day of riding tomorrow. And we decided that camping was so much fun we'd start doing it more often.
